Best (and most effective) speech at DFL Convention

Download podcast ! (runs 10:31)
The 2006 DFL State Convention is fading from memory, but one of the lessons from it should not.

If you speak from your heart, people will support you.

Steve Kelley, who was expected to finish last in the endorsement race for Governor proved that point on the second day of the convention. He won over most of the delegates who were wavering in their support for the other two candidates. It was the most effective speech of the convention…which is why it is my favorite speech of the convention. Listen to it here.

This was the speech Steve Kelley should have given six months ago. If Mike Hatch or Becky Loury want to win in September and November they should pay close attention to not just the content, but the conviction in how Kelley said it.

We also talk about one of the resolutions for the party platform that failed -- Instant Runoff Voting. Melendez explains what it is, why he supports it, and why the Republicans might too after Sue Jeffers' entry into the Governor's race.

Secretary Of State Face Off

Download podcast runs 6:12
The only real contested race at Sunday's DFL convention will be for Secretary of State. The race between Christian Sande and Mark Ritchie is expected to be tight. Until recently, Mark Ritchie's campaign has been claiming it has the votes needed for the endorsement. Christian Sande's campaign now says it has more delegates than Ritchie.

Based on talking to delegates at the convention, many have not really made up their mind because they haven't really thought about it. That combined with some delegates heading home early and alternates taking their place, neither campaign is taking endorsement for granted.

In this bonus podcast chatted with Christian Sande about the race and Sunday's vote.
